I found out recently that I’m not really getting any Financial Aid for school this year. My parents have taken out an absurd amount of loans for my brother, so they probably won’t be able to do any for me. I have a job, and work two jobs during the school year. Despite this, I’m pretty much screwed. I may not be able to afford school.
So lately I’ve been applying for scholarships. So far I’ve only applied for about seven or eight, and most of them are sort of random giveaways or depend on silly things like your GPA. While I have a good GPA (3.6), I can’t really depend on these scholarships because they are incredibly popular and competitive. I have a very, very small chance of getting them.
So I turned to looking for art scholarships. This is where I’ve been running into problems. Many of the scholarships I stumble across are school-specific. Which is fine. But it’s getting a little absurd because almost every other scholarship that isn’t school-specific is focused on photojournalism. I must be in a program for it, or provide a portfolio focusing on photojournalism. Judging by the past winners, I’m completely outclassed. I’m terrible at Photojournalism. But! I tried not to let this discourage me. I looked into environmental awareness campaigns and nature photography scholarships and grants.
I really haven’t found anything yet. Everything I could qualify for requires me to join an organization, or volunteer for a Nature Reserve in Kansas or other faraway locations. I am not against writing Essays, making phone calls, providing recommendations or anything like that. I am willing to work hard to get a scholarship. I realize that it’s not easy and requires work. But it just seems like there’s very few scholarships for photographers that focus on natural, conceptual or product subjects. I keep seeing scholarships that focus on photojournalism, sports, etc.
If anyone has any advice on good scholarships or programs to look into, please contact me. I am also looking to enter my work into contests, galleries…and just anything that will get my work out there.
My friend tells me that comments are not enabled on this blog, and since this isn’t my primary blog I guess I can’t change that. So please feel free to email me with any advice you’ve got.

Right. Now I’ll get back to actually posting some images. It’s been a strange week, sorry about the delay in posting.
